Where did the verbs stay when they went camping?

Past tents!

Welcome to Language Epiphany. I’m Irfaan and I have a passion for languages (in addition to cheesy grammar jokes).

Here I share tips for learning specific languages like Turkish and Italian. I also share my experiences with language learning in general.

Over the last 13 years I’ve studied a number of languages including Afrikaans, Arabic, Croatian, Italian, Irish, Turkish and Urdu among others (English is my native language). While some I study using courses, I usually start a new language through self-study and progress from there.

I hold certifications in Turkish (TYS: C1) and Italian (PLIDA: B1). I also graduated high school with distinctions in Afrikaans and Arabic.

That’s not to say I haven’t had a few bumps along the way. I’ve made my fair share of embarrassing language mistakes. For example once while speaking Turkish, instead of saying that I had never seen kar (snow) before, I mistakenly used the word karı (a woman) 🤭.

As a day job I work as a software engineer. In 2011 I combined my professional and personal skills to start Turkish Basics, which I still manage today.

Ever since I started learning languages I’ve had moments where a certain grammar rule suddenly made sense. Times when it all just clicked. It’s these epiphanies that I enjoy so much about learning languages.
